SPIRIT IN THE SKY - HOW IT WAS MADE

This photo was taken in a spring storm situation. I was driving from Santa Fe looking for storms to shoot and just before sunset I spotted this small storm south of Clines Corners on US 285. I drove until after sunset looking for a vantage point. In the fading light I saw the windmill and pulled over. It was already too dark to get a reading from my camera's meter so I had to make a guess (I do have a hand meter nowadays). Those of you with handheld meters will find that most of them are capable of reading extremely low light like this. The exposure was 5 minutes at f/4 on Fuji Velvia. One thing to note here is how you can get highly detailed lightning with larger apertures on the lens. At very small apertures it's possible that only the brightest parts of the lightning will expose or worse, none at all.
