BLACK & WHITE AND INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY
Welcome to the world of black and white, and infrared photography. The black and white pictures here were produced with both traditional and infrared film.
The image above was taken with Kodak High Speed Infrared Film, a black and white film that is sensitive to light in the infrared and visible portion of the spectrum. To get the best infrared effect a dark red filter is usually recommended. Special handling is required with the Kodak HSI, the film must be loaded in the camera and unloaded in complete darkness to prevent fogging. Expect to see large grain in this film, but the tradeoff is amazing false tone images.
In the photo image above, the black sky is actually the bottom of a cumulus cloud overhead. I was counting on an already high contrast situation, the film qualities, and the infrared signature of the bottom of the cloud to give me a black sky. The print was made with normal contrast and a bit of burning to make the sky uniform.
